In the fashion industry, there are girls and then there are those girls. Those girls who make us wonder and reconsider our usual standards of beauty. Those girls who have an idiosyncratic style and personality, making them to stand out from the crowd.
In the constant wave of newcomers we see on the runways every season, it’s easy to get lost within blank faces but there’s always a fresh face that catches our attention and makes fashion more fascinating. I have to admit that if it wasn’t for fashion, I wouldn’t recognize that beauty comes in so many different ways and what truly makes us beautiful is being ourselves.
Here’s a list of fresh faces that, somehow, have made quite a big impression on me on the last season. Let’s begin!
CAROLINE BRASCH NIELSEN
At first glance, she might look extremely “blah” and shy (though I find that cute on her) but seeing her gaining confidence on the runway made me fall in love with her intense look and her effortless chic and cool girl aura. She’s the kind of girl who doesn’t have an in-your-face beauty, instead she has a quiet, calm and regal presence that compliments garments so well making them to be more enhaced and I confess there’s something intriguing about her that makes you want to see more!
This lovely Danish girl had quite a big debut last season in Paris Fashion Week, walking exclusively for the highlights of the city such as Dries Van Noten, Céline, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and getting an opening slot at the Valentino show (for which she also closed their show in haute couture week).
For the Cruise season, she had big bookings such as Céline in which Caroline blended perfectly with the minimalistic yet chic look that Phoebe Philo is building for the brand. She got Christopher Kane, looking as the perfect cool girl wearing galatic prints and furry sandals and finally Balenciaga, looking as a futuristic bohemian for which she also got the covetable ad campaign.
Don’t be fool by her frail and delicate look because this cool Danish is someone to watch out!
VALERIJA KELAVA
I must confess that seeing her at the Spring 2010 shows, I thought she would be a show-filler for a season and then dropped by the following one. Boy, was I wrong! She came back stronger than ever, with a very palpable strong but inviting presence making her to get top shows from the Fall 2010 season.
But the real surprise came along with her print work, that is when her real charm comes in. I never saw potential in Valerija at first but this girl has proved to be more versatile than most newcomers. It was like she was born to be in front of the camera and not only that but also translate different moods, all feeling natural to her.
She is the perfect canvas yet not a blank hanger, as she captures you with her quirky but appealing identity. That’s a key word for her, “identity”, because she can go from one style to another without compromising her identity, you always get a genuine feeling with her.
The term “model” seems short for Valerija but she was definitely born to be one.
GWEN LOOS
One look at Gwen Loos and you’ll know what’s the fuzz about her. From ethereal creature at Nina Ricci to edgy urban cool girl at Balenciaga to refined minimal beauty at Calvin Klein to young socialite at Valentino, she’s the girl designers fight to get on their shows.
Starting with the interest of Nicolas Ghesquière to have Gwen as an exclusive for his Fall 2009 show at Balenciaga, Olivier Theyskens also wanted her to book her for his last show at Nina Ricci (he wanted to book her a year before that but he couldn’t due to age restriction laws). Nicolas gave his permission and Miss Loos also walked Nina Ricci that season.
From there, Gwen hasn’t stopped to grace the blue chip runways with her vivrant and fresh pace and for the Fall 2010 season, she got another covetable exclusive, this time for one of the most sought shows when it comes to model casting, Calvin Klein.
It’s always refreshing to see this charming Dutch stepping down the runway. She has that extra oomph that makes you fall under her charm. There’s something innocuous about her and pure at the same time, so pure that you can see any thing on her. Now that’s a model!
Step it up because Gwen Loos is already runway royalty.
That's it!
